Position Overview: 

As Director of Design Systems at Paylocity, you will lead the strategy, execution, and evolution of our enterprise-wide design system. You’ll champion consistency, scalability, and accessibility across all product experiences. This role requires a hands-on leader who can inspire teams, build strong cross-functional partnerships, and advocate for design excellence at every level of the organization. This role will lead multiple teams including design systems and accessibility. You’ll be a key voice in shaping our design culture, aligning system goals with business objectives, and presenting to executive stakeholders. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead and grow multidisciplinary team of designers, researchers, writers, and front-end developers, fostering a strong design systems culture.  
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of reusable components, patterns, and documentation.  
  • Define and drive the vision for Paylocity’s design system, aligning it with product, and documentation.  
  • Be hands-on in all aspects of design, from concept to execution, ensuring design systems are implemented consistently across products. 
  • Lead the development of visual design standards in a systemized product environment. 
  • Establish and evolve the visual design standards, including typography, color, spacing, motion, and iconography.  
  • Manage and scale a robust icon and illustration library that reflects brand values and product needs. 
  • Mentor and coach team members, cultivating leadership and accountability. 

Required Skills: 

  • 15+ years equivalent practical background, with 5+ years leading one or more teams. Varied educational paths are valued when paired with strong design leadership and execution. 
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in creating design systems across multiple platforms (mobile, web, tablet, native apps), with a focus on accessibility and localization. 
  • Deep understanding of design principles, accessibility standards (WCAG), and front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, etc.) 
  • Experience hiring. Mentoring, and developing high-performing design teams. 
  • Ability to collaborate with senior leadership, ensuring alignment with product design strategy and long-term vision. 

Preferred Skills: 

  • Proficiency with Figma, Storybook, Zeroheight, or similar tools 
  • Strong design craft with expertise across multiple design fields, including UX, UI, design systems, and prototyping, with a demonstrated track record of a robust design process. 
  • Experience collaborating with UX Research teams to translate insights into design decisions. 
  • Ability to stay current with the latest design trends, tools, and technologies and adapt to evolving design requirements. 
  • Experience leading AI and machine learning-driven design initiatives, partnering with data science teams. 

Soft Skills: 

  • Expert communicator and facilitator when engaging with business stakeholders. 
  • Curious and adaptable, with a pulse on emerging tech trends. 
  • Strong advocate for user-centered design and inclusive experiences. 
  • Skilled at building relationships in highly collaborative environments. 

 

Physical requirements: 

  • Ability to sit for extended periods: The role requires sitting at a desk or workstation for long periods, typically 7-8 hours a day. 

  • Use of computer and phone systems: The employee must be able to operate a computer, use phone systems, and type. This includes using multiple software programs and inquiries simultaneously.
